The photographs in Utility encompass everything from electron scanning microscopes to
cheese-making equipment. These are spaces most people never enter and rarely consider,
yet without them, life would grind to a halt. This series documents moments of beauty and
alignment in the industrial design we rely on, while much of what happens inside these
spaces remains unknown. I photographed these spaces with no single point of focus and no
clear entry or exit to the image, hoping the viewer will feel the scale before being drawn into
the details. I am interested in the moment of looking without immediately understanding,
and the questions that follow:
What is this? How does it work? Why does it exist?
